About Smaart and the Smaart Training program

Smaart is a sound analyser. A dual-channel, FFT-based software platform audio engineers use to view the frequency content of signals or measure the response of our electrical and electro-acoustic systems. This tool helps to examine professional sound systems in detail. Smaart is a software product providing an extremely powerful analyser in a package that is affordable for every audio professional.

The Smaart training program is designed to provide pro-audio engineers with a solid foundation in sound system measurement, optimisation and acoustical analysis.

Smaart classes are taught by certified instructors noted for their professional audio experience and superior teaching  skills. In your case this would be me.

Smaart classes are available at multiple levels, from introductory overviews to advanced level real world practicums. This allows you  to hone yours skills, from advanced beginner to professional level.

These courses curriculum however goes far beyond what one normally would understand as a simple software class. The basic course is three days and covers a wide field of sound system design, commissioning and tuning.

You can read more about the specifics of our training here.

Hosting a Smaart class

The courses are held in co-operation with what we call “class hosts”. These hosts are mainly Sound Systems distributors, Theatres, Concert houses etc. and sound rental companies.

Typically the class host does not have to pay a fee for sending technical personnel (typically around 3 to 4 technicians / engineers) to the class. However, this assumes that at least 6 to 8 out of house aka. paying students attend the class. Should this not be the case different terms have to be agreed upon.

On top of that the hosts gets a free Smaart v8 license.
The host provides a hotel room for the instructor (in winter) or a possibility to park my camper van near the venue, a class room (typically a smaller stage in the house), a basic sound system including signal distribution …. and coffee. 🙂

The “out of house” attendees are paying their fee directly to Rational Acoustics Scandinavia. From this intake we cover our costs like travel, class materials and the instructor.

The courses are limited to a maximum of 16 attendees in total. Typically the minimum is 6 to 8 “paying” attendees to cover our cost. However, I am open to negotiate how the cost can be covered. My prime interest is to give as many classes as possible. Since travelling is more limited due to COVID-19 related restrictions smaller classes seem a possibility. This is also made possible by my very flexible way of living and traveling in a camper van.

Generally the hosts are very happy with these arrangements as it gives them an opportunity to have many sound engineers trained in their facilities and these engineers get to know a possible employer.

The most popular course is the 3 day Smaart fundamentals class. This is mostly held from Tuesday to Thursday. This leaves Monday for setting up the class room.

On Fridays often a smaart-application-practicums is requested by students. These can have various topics, like subwoofer arrangements, room acoustics etc.

The definite dates will be discussed based on the hosts suggestions.
